Imagine yourself standing in the main street of a typical town in a
Spaghetti Western - that is Calafate. Or it was about 15 years ago! Nowadays, it is bigger
and the majority of the roads are tarmac. But somehow it still feels the same. Perhaps
because the main street is very straight and very long and on first sight there doesn't seem
to be much else. Or maybe because if you go into any of the large local hotels you may well
find a group of Argentine men grouped together in their cowboy hats enjoying a drink together.
Or it could be because there are packs of semi-wild dogs roaming on the edge of the town.
Whatever the reason, you do get the feeling you have reached frontier country. |
Calafate situated on the shores of Laguna Nimez, has grown considerably
as the popularity of visiting the Moreno Glacier,
as well as other tourist activities, has increased. This is the nearest town and it is still
growing with quite a lot of new building going on. The hotels are
comfortable, and range from the very simple to the top of the range. Within the town there
are several large traditional hotels. It is worth visiting the
Kosten Aike Hotel for afternoon tea, which is still a very
sociable meal in Argentina and very sumptuous.
Once in Calafate there is a lot to do and see besides the
Moreno Glacier.
